The first Oktoberfest was held in Munich, Germany on October 12, 1810. Not like the beloved event we all know, but rather a wedding celebration for Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Wanting to include his people in this celebration, Ludwig opened up the grounds for five days of festivities. The people loved the event so much that the royal family decided it should be held every year.
So as you’re drinking that stein of delish German beer this year, remember that Oktoberfest is about more than just the beer.
